d-day 80 commemoration

thursday 6th June from 6:00pm

The Normandy landings in 1944 was an historic operation that saw the Allied forces mount a large scale invasion of Nazi-occupied France that ultimately tipped the course of the Second World War in the Allies favour. Sadly, there were too many fatalities.

This year on the 80th anniversary we are remembering those heroes and will be taking part in RING FOR PEACE.

Our bell ringers will be ringing out for peace and will be joined by local visiting bell ringers at some point during the early evening.

Church will have special commemorative displays and we will be serving refreshments.

We welcome you all to come along from 6pm, listen to the bells, have a look around church, take time to pray, light a candle and stay for refreshments.

And, if you would like, you too can ring a bell for peace.

mary’s tree

mary’s card

Last year, we changed ‘Mary’s Card’ to ‘Mary’s Tree’. People wrote messages on labels to hang on the tree instead of sending individual cards. This went down well and a good amount of money was sent to help war torn families in the Ukraine. We will be having Mary’s tree again this year.

We have asked Mary Starkey’s family to choose the charity for this year in memory of their mother/grandmother.

WEEKDAY ONLINE BIBLE READINGS & PRAYERS

UPDATE (14 JULY:) WE ARE TAKING A BREAK FOR SUMMER, AND THESE WILL RESUME IN SEPTEMBER

FRIDAY DROP-IN

10:00AM TO NOON FRIDAYS AT CHURCH

We are open EVERY FRIDAY to share time together or have some quiet prayer or reflection time inside church.

Hot drinks and homemade bakes are on offer.

We often have visitors on the day, especially as the warmer, longer, brighter days are with us.  Sometimes it might be someone on holiday or someone who is researching a family member. We always give a warm welcome and they are soon chatting away to whoever is there. Maybe that could be you, offering a friendly welcome and sitting alongside them.

Or why not come along this week and bring a friend?

Also, if you are finding it difficult getting to church on a Sunday while the road improvement works are happening, why don’t you come along on a Friday instead.

Access to church during weekend road closures

The A595 access to church will be closed again at weekends from 8am Friday night until 5am Monday morning.

We have heard that the work is going to plan so hopefully by the time the next diary is out we will be road closure free!

If you are travelling from the South -

Access will be via Rosehill and Church Brow for the weekends of 30th June-2nd July and 7th-9th July.

Otherwise it will be - arrive at the Pelican garage on the A595 and explain to the marshal that you're going to St. Bridget's church. You will be let through and will then follow the diversion down first brow through Foundry road in Parton and up to church.

If you are travelling from the North -

Arrive at the Distington roundabout (with Lakes college on your right) and turn right towards Harrington. After a few hundred meters turn left towards Distington golf course - explain to the marshal you are going to St. Bridget's church - then turn first left after the golf course to drive through Lowca and arrive at church.

Remember you don’t need a pass, you just have to say that you are going to church and they will let you through.

If you have any further queries you are able to contact the public liaison officer Stephen Tumelty on 07834 418 160 or at stephen.tumelty@aeyates.co.uk

access to church during weekend road closures

MANY OF YOU WILL BE WONDERING HOW TO GET TO CHURCH WITHOUT A PASS DURING THE ROAD CLOSURE OF THE A595 BEGINNING ON MAY 12TH AND RUNNING FOR AT LEAST 10 CONSECUTIVE WEEKENDS. AT A MEETING ON APRIL 26TH AT PARTON VILLAGE HALL STEVE MASON FROM THE HIGHWAYS AGENCY CONFIRMED ALL CHURCH ATTENDEES WOULD JUST HAVE TO EXPLAIN TO THE GATEKEEPER THEY ARE GOING TO CHURCH AND THAT THEY WILL BE LET THROUGH.

So whether you're coming from the north or south the following guidance is intended to make it as simple as possible for you. If you usually come down Rosehill I would advise joining the A595 further south and following the first instructions here...

From the South - arrive at the Pelican garage on the A595 and explain to the gatekeeper that you're going to St. Bridget's church. You will be let through and will then follow the diversion down first brow through Foundry road in Parton and up to church.

From the North - arrive at the Distington roundabout (with Lakes college on your right) and turn right towards Harrington. After a few hundred meters turn left towards Distington golf course - explain to the gatekeeper you are going to St. Bridget's church - then turn first left after the golf course to drive through Lowca and arrive at church.

access to church during weekend road closures

Many of you will be wondering how to get to church without a pass during the road closure of the A595 beginning on May 12th and running for at least 10 consecutive weekends. At a meeting on April 26th at Parton Village Hall Steve Mason from the Highways Agency confirmed all church attendees would just have to explain to the gatekeeper they are going to church and that they will be let through.

So whether you're coming from the north or south the following guidance is intended to make it as simple as possible for you. If you usually come down Rosehill I would advise joining the A595 further south and following the first instructions here...

200TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT - MARRIAGE THROUGH THE DECADES

FRIDAY 26TH AUGUST - MONDAY 29TH AUGUST 11:00AM TO 5:00PM

We look forward to welcoming you to a very special event at St Bridget’s.

There will be a range of bridal dresses dating from 1939 to current day arranged around church. These will be dresses (and suits!) worn at weddings held in church over the past 10 decades.

Come along and listen to the bells or the organ. There will also be a PowerPoint of photos of weddings that have been held at church over the past 100 years. We look forward to providing you a warm welcome!

**We are asking for volunteers to be at church during the four days we are open, and also for baking! We are setting up a rota and getting in touch nearer the time.

** We are still looking for anyone who has a 1940’s wedding dress that was worn at St Bridget’s.

** Also we are looking to borrow a couple more tailor dummies to use for displaying our wedding dresses. Please let Jim, Ruth or Mandy know.

** We will be having a display of wedding hats and fascinators. If you are able to lend yours for that weekend please get in touch with Mandy or Ruth.

** We continue to ask for any photos and memorabilia that you might have relevant to St Bridget’s 200th anniversary.
